Reflections on Sydney

10:36am 03/10/2008

Dinner last night was very fun. We started out by walking down to a place near where we were staying that had been recommended to us, but they had smokers all throughout the restaurant (outdoor and indoor) so we gave that place a miss instantly. We caught a taxi down near Circular Quay and found a restaurant that is effectively Sydney's equivalent of the Cuckoo in Melbourne. I liked some things about it, like the wide range of menu items and the way the menu was presented, but overall I think I like the Cuckoo better.

This morning was the usual rush of packing and leaving. We didn't do that badly though. We didn't all really get up until about 8am and we were out the door by 10:15am. I have to say, we're all pretty glad to get out of there. It was far too cramped, there was nothing to do in the resort (which was more of a building then a resort), and there were not enough facilities or space in the apartment for four people.

We're on the road up north again now, on the Pacific Highway. We're going to stay for a few days at a place called Tuncurry, which is where my Dad's brother lives.

Seeing the sights of Sydney has been a lot of fun. It's great to finally be able to say that we've seen the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House and Bondi Beach and the like. I've gotta say a few things about it though.

The people here are useless. Like I wrote yesterday, the people have no idea about transport. They all seem to smoke as well. I reckon my lifespan has decreased by a few days because of all the tobacco smoke I've had to inhale while walking around the city. Something else that I've found is that they never seem to sleep. Even when I was still awake near midnight on Monday night, and we had the door open because it was really hot, you could always hear the traffic outside, amongst other ambiance noise noise. And all day, every day, at least once an hour, there was a siren from an emergency vehicle going past, and it would echo all around the city. That more then anything was annoying when you were trying to get to sleep.

Something else that I never really noticed when on holiday before is how limited my time is to do things like listen to music or write or read when I want to. Going on holiday can be very time-consuming. I brought away my Maths and Physics folders so I could do some homework, but I simply haven't had any time to do any (although admittedly, in that cramped apartment, there was no room to do any either).

I'm gonna copy all the photos off my camera now (my 2 GB memory card is nearly full, i've taken over a thousand photos on this holiday so far), and then I'm gonna watch The Matrix Reloaded after that. If I get time I'll probably write some more before we get there.

okay...the Cuckoo? 'splain pleeease :)

and yeah, the whole 'have time to do your own stuff' thing on holidays never works. I've tried, all the time. I do most of my writing right before bed, and I fall asleep with music in. Otherwise, you honestly just don't have time to do anything.

last thing: My favourite cities in the world are the ones that don't sleep. HK, NYC, Barcelona...all of them have an insanely vibrant nightlife. (like London and Paris too) It's fun to be out at 1 in the morning and know that most things are still open, and people are still awake and having fun. (oh funny times...3am when I was texting you in NYC, I could still hear fire trucks/police cars/ambulances etc outside. :)

Where are you going now? / are you home??!!

okay,...last last thing. the whole smoking thing? be glad you're not anywhere else in the world. I reckon Sydney's pretty clean compared to HK/Amsterdam/NYC... :P

The Cuckoo is a German restaurant with great food and great entertainment. it really is the only restaurant in Melbourne where you're guaranteed a great time.

I'll say. I've been writing more then just blog posts, but I really haven't had enough time to write it all

You've wondered around cities at 1 in the morning? :P
and yeah, it really is a whole different atmosphere. weird, but cool.

Nah, I'm up north now. we're leaving to head back south on Monday, and we'll be back Tuesday afternoon (probably around midnight your time)

I'd probably have to get a mask and wear it around :P

The truth about Matthew.

Matthew has Aspergers. This means that his brain is wired slightly differently to that of a "normal" person. He has no concept of feelings and has no understanding of other peoples feelings. His blog proves that.

He has told the story from his point of view. It is a good "story" but unfortunately it is not quite the truth.

Matthew has many annoying habits relating to cleanliness (he doesn't believe in it), clothes (any old clothes will do), hair cuts (doesn't want those either), and shaving (school students aren't supposed to grow beards).

He is also very arrogant, argumentative and pedantic like you wouldn't believe. At times he carries on like a policeman, laying down his version of the law. However, he has no interest in complying with the local rules around the home.

He is addicted to his computer and can't bear to be away from it, tap tap tapping on the keyboard all day when he is not at school. He has no other hobbies other than playing his music loud (especially when he gets angry). He has no social life outside of the computer other than Venturers (scouts) on a Wednesday night. But just like at school, there have been major blow ups here as well.

You see it is not just his parents that he doesn't get on with. It is most of the rest of the world.

He has no understanding of how to interact properly with people on a face to face basis. He is quite happy exchanging emails with people around the world but has difficulty sustaining friendships with people his own age that he has met through school or scouts.

I used the word "normal" at the start of this comment. He hates that word with a passion, believeing that there is no such thing.

Matthew's Mum and Dad.
